Sperrylite is an arsenide mineral that includes platinum as a base element. It is a very rare mineral that occurs in opaque metallic tine white color. Sperrylite crystallizes in the isometric system with a pyrite group structure. It forms crystalls that are cubic, octahedral, or pyritohedral. The Mohs scale of hardness ranks Sperrylite as a 6-7, making it pretty hard. Sperrylite also has a very high specific gravity of 10.6
Sperrylite is so named because it was discovered by Francis Louis Sperry, who was an American chemist. H.H. Wells first described the mineral in 1889 at Sudbury Basin in Ontario, Canada, and named it for Sperry because he has found the first original material in 1887. This is where the most important occurrence of Sperrylite is, in the nickel ore deposits of that area. It can also be found in the Bushveld region of South Africa and the copper-nickel deposits of Eastern Siberia in Russia.
Mick Shemesian is a mineral prospector of some repute because of his over two decades of experience in the industry. He has accomplished a great deal during those twenty years and has been able to work all over the world, including Asia, North America, and Africa. However, he originally started his mineral prospecting work in Australia, where he worked in the Pilbara region.
